Selling a home you’ve lived in for decades is one of the biggest decisions you’ll ever make. Choosing the right Realtor to guide you through it matters just as much as the decision to sell itself.
Not all real estate agents are the same and when you’re navigating a move later in life, experience, patience and local knowledge make all the difference. Before you sign anything, here are five questions worth asking:
1. Do you have experience working with seniors and downsizing?
Downsizing isn’t just a real estate transaction - it’s an emotional journey. You want a Realtor who understands that, who won’t rush you and who has helped other older adults in the Niagara Region navigate the same transition. Ask for examples. A good agent will have plenty to share.
2. How well do you know the local Niagara market?
Whether you’re in St. Catharines, Welland, Vineland or Niagara-on-the-Lake, market conditions can vary from one part of the region to the other. Your agent should know the difference - what Buyers are looking for in your area, what similar homes are selling for and how long the’y’ve been sitting on the market. Local knowledge isn’t a bonus. It’s essential.
3. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
This is a big one. Will they call you, text you or send emails you have to chase down? A great Realtor keeps you informed at every step, explains things clearly and never makes you feel like you’re bothering them with questions. You deserve to feel supported, not sidelined.
4. Can you connect me with trusted professionals I might need?
Selling a home often means more than just listing it. You may need a lawyer, a mover, a painter or a downsizing specialist. A well connected local agent should be able to point you toward people they trust - professionals who have experience working with older adults and who will treat you with respect.
5. What’s your approach to pricing and selling my home?
You want an honest answer here; not just a high number to win your business. Ask how they determine a listing price, what their marketing plan looks like and how they handle Offers. A trustworthy agent will walk you through the strategy - not just tell you what you want to hear.
The right fit makes all the difference.
Selling your Niagara home should feel like a supported, well-guided experience - not a stressful one. Take your time, ask the hard questions and choose someone who truly listens.
If you’d like to have that conversation, I’d be happy to chat. There’s never any pressure - just honest advice from someone who cares about getting it right for you.
